Recognizing the urgent need to address environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, the project seeks to empower participants to take action towards building a more sustainable future. Through a combination of education, advocacy, and practical initiatives, the project aims to inspire positive environmental change at the local, national, and global levels.

LATCH

Literacy at the Children’s Hearts

Scholastic Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019

Our School was accepted for an Erasmus + project during Scholastic Years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, with four other schools abroad. The project title is LITERACY AT THE CHILDREN’S HEARTS with the project acronym LATCH. The schools participating with us are from: Portlaoise Ireland, Maribor Slovenia, Kopavogur Iceland and Macroom Ireland.

The first meeting was at our school on the 20th October 2017, with our four partners visiting the classes and afterwards meeting together in Sr Antonia’s office in order to plan this year’s work together.

The visitors were very impressed with the school atmosphere and the children’s good behaviour. The children welcomed these visitors with songs and asked questions about their countries.

Professional development through Erasmus +

Teachers strongly believe in the importance of continuous professional development. One of the ways is through projects funded by the EU such as this Erasmus + project LATCH.

Two members of staff and a Learning Support Educator have recently returned from a trip to Maribor in Slovenia where they were welcomed by the staff and pupils of the OS Borcev za Severno Mejo School. This trip was part of a series of trips to Iceland, Ireland Macroom and Portlaise, and Slovenia in which the Maltese teachers, LSEs and members of staff participated. This time the trip was targeted at evaluating achievements and finalising the programme which will be coming to an end in June with a second visit by the foreign partners to Malta.

Through this programme, which was called LATCH (Literacy at the Children’s Hearts) and which commenced in 2017, all partners worked together on different strategies in implementing literacy. With this project coming to an end in June 2019, Theresa Nuzzo School is already trying to embark on another Erasmus + Project as a continuation of the first, this time acting as coordinators.

Our Staff has also attended the workshop on The Finnish Educational System held at the Dolmen Hotel, Qawra, Malta on 8th March 2018. This workshop was in collaboration with the Tumas Fenech Foundation for Education in Journalism and Mater Boni Consilii St Joseph School, Paola.

The programme included the following themes:

The project was concluded in Malta in May 2019.

During the whole project, our Mascot LATCH traveled from one country to the other and wrote his experience.

My journey came to an end on a small island in the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta. It is an island with a very interesting history and culture and surrounded by clear blue sea. The people speak their own language which is Maltese, but I was surprised to find that all children speak a second language which is English!

As I entered the library of Theresa Nuzzo School I found out that it had just been refurbished.  The shelves were loaded with newly bought books in both languages. I was so pleased when I realised that I was a contributor to this upgrade in the library.

Every child knew about me and I felt like a real star as children held me close to them and took pictures of us.

Now, that l’ve dropped anchor on this island I will stay with the pupils of Theresa Nuzzo School because I know that literacy is at their heart.
